Paula note from Paul Rosenthal, Artistic Director

The Sitka Summer Music Festival has been for me that rarest of rarities -- the dream that has come true and remained true.

The magic of the Ocean and the Mountains has remained as inspiring and refreshing as the first time I felt it back in the sixties.  The town of Sitka has kept its charm and energy and its people have welcomed the visiting musicians hospitably and eagerly every year.  Visitors from all over who have been captivated by the beauty of the music and the town return again and again.

The musicians, though most of us are no longer the kids we were in the early days of the festival, still arrive full of enthusiasm for the place, for the concerts, for the magnificent auditorium with its unique view, and for each other.  Year after year these wonderful artists return without fee to enjoy this magic and the dream that somehow has kept its luster through the years.

Perhaps it is because in Sitka we don't play for money or glory that the music itself and the concerts mean so much to us.  Whatever the reason -- and I believe it is better not to look too closely into such mysteries -- a very large percentage of the musicians at the Sitka Festival have that extra something that makes all of us, performers and audience members alike, feel the special joy that is the gift of great music, lovingly played and heard.

ZuillZuill Bailey, Artistic Director Designate (2012)

Zuill Bailey, one of the most sought after cellists performing today just got busier. Bailey has been appointed as the Artistic Director designate of the Sitka Summer Music Festival and series.

The announcement was made by Paul Rosenthal, Artistic Director of the Music Festival for nearly 40 years. Mr. Rosenthal, a world renowned violinist, will step down from the position in 2012, on the eve of his 70th birthday. Zuill Bailey will act as Associate Director of the Sitka Summer Music Festival and series and work hand in hand with Paul Rosenthal to insure the level of artistry and leadership continues through the transition and beyond.

Paul Rosenthal, stated, “Zuill Bailey, a magnificent cellist, known for having the highest artistic integrity, imagination, vision and leadership skills will prove to be an invigorating inspiration for the Sitka Summer Music Festival and series.”

The musical excellence of the Sitka Summer Music Festival and series inspires enthusiastic praise from Mr. Bailey. “I am truly honored to carry the torch for such a prestigious festival that makes an incredible impact on the arts and the State of Alaska.”

In addition to his extensive performing schedule, cellist Zuill Bailey is an exclusive Telarc recording artist, the Artistic Director of the El Paso Pro Musica Chamber Music Festival and series, and is Professor of Cello at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Bobia note from Roberta B. Rinehart, Executive Director

In 1996, I moved to Sitka and was introduced to the Sitka Summer Music Festival by a dear friend of the Festival, the late Warren Christianson -- I have been hooked ever since.

In 2005, I returned to Alaska after working in Seattle as the Executive Director of North Pacific Marine Science Foundation. In the Fall of 2007, I had the good fortune to be chosen as the the Executive Director of the Sitka Summer Music Festival.  This job is a dream come true for me.  Thank you!
